Along with the bolts on your stem, the lockring hidden away under the top cap helps keep your headset from coming loose when the going gets a little tough.
It also allows you to completely remove your stem and bars to service your bike or to pack it in a box or travel case while only having two hands.

The Da ROUGHSTUFF headset is unique in that is has an additional locking mechanism built into the upper race for added security.
This also means that the clamping forces on the fork steerer tube are spread over a wider area because it uses an additional bolt within the headset and not just the clamping bolts on your stem.
The Da ROUGHSTUFF 1 1/4 headset is designed for tapered headsets that have 1 1/8" upper and 1 1/4" lower races.
The Da ROUGHSTUFF 1 1/4 headset can be purchased with either a top cap and star fangled nut which is suitable for alloy steerers or a compression nut that is suitable for forks with carbon steerer tubes.
The Da ROUGHSTUFF 1 1/4 uses Sealed ANGULAR CONTACT BEARINGS.
Angular Contact bearings are better for headsets because they distribute both radial and axial loads evenly prolonging bearing life.
